A Day in the Life of a Residential Support Worker

Every day as a Residential Support Worker brings something new - and that’s exactly what I love most about the role. Whether it’s supporting a young person through a small task or simply being there to listen during a difficult moment, this job is all about being present, patient, and compassionate.

My day begins with a handover from the night team. This gives me a clear snapshot of how each young person is doing - whether someone had a challenging night or made progress toward a personal goal. From there, the day starts to unfold. Some young people may need support getting ready, while others just want to chat over breakfast. Whether it’s brushing teeth, cooking a meal, or tidying up, every task is an opportunity to encourage independence and build trust.

Throughout the day, I step into many roles - mentor, motivator, listener, and sometimes just a calm, consistent presence. I’ve supported individuals facing a wide range of challenges, from complex mental health needs to those who simply need a little extra guidance. Every young person is different, and I take pride in adapting my approach to suit each one’s unique personality, strengths, and needs.

Some days are about setting goals and celebrating the wins - no matter how small. Other days are about being there in the harder moments: managing anxiety, coping with frustration, or simply sitting together in silence. But every interaction, big or small, matters. Sometimes, just being there without judgement is what makes the biggest difference.

Being named Employee of the Month was a proud moment, but the real reward is in the everyday moments - seeing a young person smile, make progress, or simply feel safe and heard. I feel incredibly fortunate to do what I do - and even more so to do it alongside such a passionate and dedicated team.
